1) 在西里西亞的一個主要城巿,也是保羅的出生地及早年的家鄉。
   使徒行傳 9:11; 21:39; 22:3. 甚至在希臘歷史的興盛時期曾
   是個重要城巿。在羅馬內戰時,它是屬該撒這一邊的,而且在
  該撒來訪的時候,改了城巿的名為茱利奧波利斯。亞古士督讓
   這城成為自由城巿。在早期羅馬皇帝統轄之下,是個著名的教
   育城。斯特拉波將它視為與雅典及亞歷山大港一樣的。大數也
   是繁榮的商業地。位於西德努斯河岸之寬闊與肥沃的平原上。
   如今沒什麼重要的遺跡存留。

Tarsus = "a flat basket"
1) a major city in Cilicia and the birthplace and early home of Paul.
   Acts 9:11; 21:39; 22:3. Even in the flourishing period of Greek
   history it was an important city. In the Roman civil wars, it
   sided with Caesar and on the occasion of a visit from him its name
   changed to Juliopolis. Augustus made it a free city. Its was
   renowned as a place of education under the early Roman emperors.
   Strabo compares it in this respect to Athens and Alexandria.
   Tarsus also was a place of much commerce. It was situated in a
   wild and fertile plain on the banks of the Cydnus. No ruins of any
   importance remain.
